Sign Asset Management and Parking Analysis at Scale

James Graham, GIS and Applications Manager, Washington DC Dept of Transportation
Jason Sealy, Sales Executive, Cyclomedia Technology, Inc.

A dense urban environment typically means that ROW assets are correspondingly very dense.  DC’s Department of Transportation (DDOT) is responsible for the management and maintenance of all traffic signs - approximately 400,000 overall.   Due to both the volume of assets and the high frequency of repair/replacement activities, we endeavored to create a GIS-based system to address the challenge.  However, simply creating a map of all the signs is not enough.  DDOT contracted with Cyclomedia to capture high resolution street-level imagery as well as a GIS inventory all of the signs in DC.  This project describes how DDOT created a custom Web app to help manage sign assets by pairing street-level imagery and the sign GIS.  We hope to show that blending GIS and LiDaR-based street-level imagery can be a transformative addition to your ROW asset management program.

TED Talk  - The Earth Archive

An unprecedented scientific effort to Lidar scan the entire surface of the Earth before it’s too late.

The climate crisis threatens to destroy our entire cultural and ecological heritage in a matter of decades – how can we document everything before it disappears? In this fascinating talk, archaeologist Chris Fisher will take you deep in the Honduran jungle on an expedition to find a lost city and explain why we must LiDAR scan the entire surface of the Earth, not just as a record for future generations, but as a tool to fight climate change and save our planet. Dr. Chris Fisher is an archaeologist, National Geographic Explorer, Professor of Anthropology at Colorado State University, and the Founder & Director of The Earth Archive. In 2007, he and his team first documented the ancient city of Angamuco, a sprawling metropolis that once had as many structures as modern-day Manhattan. His recent work uses remote sensing technologies, including LiDAR, to better understand urbanism and environmental change in Mexico and Honduras.

Jamie Curtin, Global Sales Manager Geospatial Content Solutions, Hexagon

Hexagon is setting a new standard in the industry to capture anything and everything in 2D and 3D. Using customer success stories and technology examples, this session will discuss the advantages of mapping above the ground, on the ground, and below the ground to capture, visualize, measure and plan the smart city of the future.

Asset Mapping

City owned assets, particularly those located in the Rights-Of Ways, are becoming key components in the deployment of smart city technologies. Utilizing asset mapping enables a city to quickly gather information about its infrastructure so it can easily begin to develop plans to build smart city capabilities. This track offers a city leader resources to learn how to best use assets that are inventoried and illustrated in a map, to develop plans to use their assets to address communities' needs. Industry experts will provide insights on the following topics:

What is asset mapping versus asset tracking?

The Life of Your Asset: How will 5G change your asset management?

Innovation Highlights: live demonstrations of asset mapping technology and asset management platforms

What Lies Beneath

Rob Martindale, PLS - Utilities Program Manager, Colorado Dept of Transportation

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will discuss how C.R.S.  9-1.5-101 (811 Law) impacts management of utility data, including 5G facilities, within State Highway Right of Ways. In particular, theyi will discuss how permitted utilities are leveraging new technologies. Utilizing asset mapping enables CDOT to efficiently gather as-built locations about infrastructure installed within the State's Right of Way.

Mapping the Underground

Page Tucker, CEO, ProStar Geocorp

The vast network of roads, highways, and bridges that spans our nation is aging and in serious need of replacement and expansion. In the United States alone, approximately 2.5 million miles of paved roads and highways are relied on daily to support the nation’s commerce and commuting demands. What you may not know is there is also a vast subsurface network that we cannot see and is far greater in size - It is estimated that there are over 30 million miles of buried utilities that provide our vital resources including water, electricity, gas and telecommunications. As concerns arise over the safety and reliability of the surface infrastructure, the subsurface infrastructure should share equal concern.  Every time repair, replacement, or expansion occurs on the surface systems, we risk damaging what lies below. In fact, every minute of every working day, a utility is severely damaged. To address this growing concern, state agencies, utility owners, and construction companies are turning to modern geospatial and mapping technologies. During this session we will explore how new technology is being implemented in Colorado to address the growing concerns associated to what lies below.

4D Volumetric Asset Mapping, Digital Twins and AI

Peter Atalla, CEO & Founder, Voxelmaps

Learn how the latest High Definition volumetric mapping technology goes beyond 3D maps to create a Digital Twin of your city. Voxelmaps technology uses this Digital Twin with its advanced artificial intelligence agents, to automatically extract and measure assets, create HD Map data and detect in assets & city infrastructure over time. Creating better data, faster and more cost effectively than ever before.
