Prof. Dr. Gong Ke of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) will focus on the broader engineering perspective on digital twins and their value for cities and sustainable development. Peter Parslow of ISO/TC 211 will provide a brief overview of how geographic information can form the bedrock of an urban scale digital twin, equipping the community to achieve its objectives, be they environmental, social, or financial sustainability. And how open standards for that data are the springboard. Dr. Nadine Alameh will cover OGC’s vision, opportunities, challenges, and efforts in the digital twins space. Richard Petrie of buildingSMART will speak on the role of openBIM in the context of digital twins is crucial in the next phase of the digital transformation. The value of being able to integrate BIM and GIS information into well structured workflows is becoming more and more important as the built asset industry finds methodologies for higher productivity and growth. The clear demand for open standards is driving real change and opportunity and with it, new potential through digital twins and the supporting technologies that underpins the whole industry. Dr. Aniruddha Roy of Genesys International will present on behalf of AGI India.

The concept of Digital Twins is seeing an increased interest from industries globally. Thanks to improvements in technology and reduction in costs of sensors for data capture, a convergence of the digital world with the physical world is now a reality. Leading organizations around the globe are trying to quantify or estimate the benefits of Digital Twin adoption, which drive productivity, reduce costs and provide an improved understanding of the performance of physical assets and systems.
We are also witnessing new opportunities to create and utilize Spatial Digital Twins within the geospatial ecosystem. Public authorities and governmental and multilateral agencies are an increasingly important driving force in the funding and development of Digital Twins to serve a wide variety of business needs of public interest. Technology providers and industry participants continuously adapt existing solutions, services, and innovations to allow more comprehensive Digital Twin solutions.
The World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC) undertook research to assess the current affairs on Spatial Digital Twins. For this study, WGIC has considered the offerings from WGIC Members and the industry at large. It also evaluated global initiatives and investments by the Public Agencies.

Executive Director, World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC)
Under Ryan’s leadership, millions of satellite images have been made available to the general public at no charge, allowing scientists, planners, and policy makers to make better-informed decisions on a range of environmental problems. Her advocacy for revamping the 36-year-old Landsat Data Policy (in 2008) has resulted in annual economic benefits of $2.1B globally. Barbara’s career began in 1974 at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) where she spent the next 34 years working in seven States and Washington, D.C. From 2008 to 2012, she was Director of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Space Programme, and from 2012 to 2018, Ryan was the Secretariat Director of the intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO) in Geneva, Switzerland. In January 2021, Barbara became the second Executive Director of the World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC), a global not-for-profit trade association of private-sector companies working in the geospatial and Earth observation ecosystem. Her interests build on a long career in environmental governance, science and technology, and international collaboration. She is a strong advocate for open data policies, the integration of Earth observations, and hyper-partnering to ensure that existing and planned resources can be more effectively used to address the significant environmental and social issues facing the world today.
CEO, Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)
Dr. Nadine Alameh serves the CEO of OGC, a global consortium leading the future of location with community, standards and innovation for the good of society. She is a seasoned professional with a passion for interoperable information exchange and the applications of geospatial technologies in a variety of domains in all sorts of domains. Prior to OGC, she held various roles in industry from Chief Architect for Innovation in Northrop Grumman’s Civil Solutions Unit; to CEO of an Aviation data startup; to technical advisor to NASA’s Applied Sciences. Dr. Alameh holds 3 degrees from MIT: a Ph.D. in Information Systems Engineering, and 2 Master Degrees in Civil Engineering and Urban Planning.

Peter Atalla is CEO and Founder of Voxelmaps Inc, a leading GIS mapping company building 4D Maps for Machines. He has been in the mapping industry for 17 years and has led large scale international mapping projects for some of the biggest technology companies in the world. Previously he was CEO and founder of Navmii a navigation and mapping company with over 30 million users that mapped 180 countries. Peter is a technology entrepreneur with 2 successful exits.

Arnout Desmet is currently Vice President in the Maps unit responsible for global sourcing in TomTom. He joined the company in 1998. The TomTom high-quality, navigable maps cover over 140 countries and are used by thousands of automotive manufacturers, governmental, and enterprise customers worldwide. Throughout his long career with TomTom, Mr. Desmet took up several leadership roles in project and operations management and business and new market development through partnerships with local and regional content providers and aggregators. He holds a master's degree in Agricultural Engineering and a postgraduate degree in Economics.
Prof. Dr. Gong Ke
Immediate Past President, World Federation of Engineering Organizations
Prof. Dr. GONG Ke was born in 1955 in Beijing, China. After obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from Beijing Institute of Technology, he studied further in Technical University of Graz (Austria), where he worked on radio wave propagation in satellite links and obtained his Doctor Degree of Technological Science in 1986. From 1987 to 2006, he worked in Tsinghua University, Beijing, as a full professor in Electronic Engineering (1994), Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering (1997-1999), Director of the State Key Laboratory of Microwave and Digital Communication at Tsinghua University (1997-2004), Vice President (R&D) of Tsinghua University (1999-2006), Director of Chinese National Research Center for Information Science and Technology at Tsinghua University (2004-2006). He served as the President of Tianjin University from 2006 to 2011. He carried on as the President of Nankai University in 2011 and stepped down in 2018.

Dan Isaacs is a Chief Technical Officer of Digital Twin Consortium, where he is responsible for setting the technical direction, liaison partnerships and support for new memberships. Previously, Dan was Director of Strategic Marketing and Business Development at Xilinx where he was responsible for emerging technologies including machine learning, defining, and executing the ecosystem strategy for the Industrial IoT and Automotive Business. Dan also represented Xilinx for the Industry IoT Consortium (IIC). He has more than 25 years of experience working in automotive, mil/aero and consumer-based companies including Ford, NEC, LSI Logic and Hughes Aircraft. Dan has been a keynote speaker and panellist for IIC World Forums, Industrial IOT Global conferences, Embedded World, Embedded Systems, and FPGA Conferences. Dan serves on international advisory boards. He holds degrees in Computer Engineering: EE from Cal State University, B.S. Geophysics from ASU.
Global Civil Design & Engineering General Manager, Trimble Inc
Shelly Nooner is General Manager, Civil Design and Engineering with Trimble, responsible for the entire civil infrastructure software solutions portfolios. She has been with Trimble since 2000, including over 20 years as Director of Marketing. Since joining Trimble in 2002 she has worked in multiple divisions using her capabilities to understand customer requirements and her knowledge to help establish a valuable and integrated solution for them across the lifecycle. Shelly is based in Trimble Rockies office in Westminster, Colorado.

Peter Parslow is a software engineer with particular experience designing corporate data management systems especially for geographic production. He is involved in standards for geographic data for some fifteen years and now chairs ISO’s technical committee for geographic information.

Tony Rinella is a Senior Director with Strategic Building Innovation • bimSCORE. His background includes architectural design, creation of systems for knowledge, financial and facility management, design automation, BIM protocol and project delivery processes, and educational programs. Tony's focus on computer systems to improve built environments began at U.C. Berkeley in the 1970s when he authored software to predict performance of passive solar buildings, and continued through positions in architecture, property management, and software development companies. As principal and CIO of Anshen + Allen, Architects, and leader of information services for over two decades, Tony initiated programs for smart CAD, BIM, decision support, knowledge management, and facility management. He has independently developed original software and websites, and advised product planning and development for clients including Graphisoft, Dassault Systemes, Canterbury Systems. Tony's passion for education lead him to crate learning centers and wikis focused on BIM, Sustainability, Evidence-Based Design, and Medical Planning/Design. He has been advisor to AEC Knowledge and LearnVirtual, and developed the Multi-Point / Multi-Program virtual conference approach for the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Partnering with colleagues at LearnVirtual, he launched DESIGN[realized], a live, interactive, internet-delivered educational program for the AEC industry and facility owners. His participation in professional organizations includes service as national chair of AIA Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Community and contributions to National BIM Standard. He collaborated with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories on BIM research supporting cost control and sustainability goals, contributing to case studies for National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Tony wrote sections on technology for AIA's The Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice (2008 & 2014 editions), and has given dozens of invited presentations internationally.

Aniruddha Roy, Ph.D. is Chief Technology Officer in Genesys International Corporation Ltd, an advanced geospatial company with headquarters in Mumbai, India. He is responsible for enabling business through conceptualizing applications as relevant to the vertical business segment through emerging technologies. Prior to this, he was Vice President- Strategic Business Group (GIS) in Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd. and responsible for the technical operations in GIS across Navayuga group companies for 7 years. He has served more than a decade at ESRI India ( A strategic alliance software company between ESRI Inc., USA and NIIT Technologies Ltd, India) in various positions. He has over 29 years of experience in geospatial technologies. He has a sound technical knowledge in GIS platforms and presents technology solutions on various vertical domains as applicable to governance at various national and international forums. He is experienced in the development and implementation of GIS-based applications for industry. He is currently a member of ‘FICCI National council of Geospatial committee’ in FICCI, New Delhi, Co-Chairman of ‘Geospatial technology committee’ in ASSOCHAM and also a technical member of ‘geospatial committee’ of Bureau of Indian Standards ( BIS), Government of India. He was a member of ‘FICCI UAV policy formation committee’. He has been Consultant to various funding agencies like DFID, The World Bank and other international agencies during his career. He has published over 50 technical papers on GIS and Remote Sensing in various conferences/ journals.

Bill Singleton is the Vice President at Ecopia AI and has been with the company for 6 years. His main responsibility is engaging with geospatial analytics partners to find new ways of combining vector base maps with alternate data sets to help public & private entities better understand and improve the communities in which they operate. Previously, he spent 5 years working in enterprise sales at Cisco Systems Canada, providing data center and voice solutions. Following this, he graduated with an MBA from the Ivey School of Business with a focus on entrepreneurship and managing high-growth companies.

Brian Soliday has over 30 years of extensive experience working in sales, marketing and channel development within the GIS and remote sensing industries. He currently serves as Chief Revenue Officer for Voxelmaps. His career includes CRO, VP and director level positions with leading geospatial organizations such as Autodesk, Trimble, Space Imaging, LizardTech, Intermap, and TerraGo. Mr. Soliday has presented at over 100 geospatial events on an international basis and has written published articles in; Planning, Point of Beginning, GEOinformatics, The World & I, GEOEurope, Arc News, Space News, and Earth Observation Magazine. Soliday earned MA/BS degrees in geography specializing in remote sensing and GIS from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

ISO/TC 211 Geographic information is responsible for standardization in the field of digital geographic information. We aim to establish a structured set of standards for information concerning objects or phenomena that are directly or indirectly associated with a location relative to the Earth. These standards specify methods, tools and services for managing geographic data including definition and description, acquiring, processing, analyzing, accessing, presenting and transferring such data in digital / electronic form between different users, systems and locations. The work links to appropriate standards for information technology and data where possible, and provides a framework for the development of sector-specific applications using geographic data.
The WFEO (World Federation of Engineering Organizations) is the international organization for the engineering profession. Founded in 1968, under the auspices of UNESCO, WFEO brings together national engineering institutions from some 100 nations and represents more than 30 million engineers.
